Aondoaver Asom, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Benue state Police Command has died defending his fellow passengers during an armed robbery attack in Ushongo Local Government Area of the state.
The incident happened last Tuesday February 24, 2026 when the commercial vehicle he was travelling in to his new place of assignment was ambushed by armed robbers at Amile, along the Ugbema–Jato-Aka road.

Our Correspondent gathered that in the course of defending himself and other passengers, the officer reportedly shot three of the attackers dead.
However, he sustained gunshot injuries during the battle and when he and another injured passenger were rushed to the General Hospital, Gboko, he was confirmed dead while receiving treatment.
But the other victim is currently responding to treatment at the same facility.

The late officer’s service rifle was recovered, while his remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
The Police, in a statement have commended his bravery, describing his actions as a courageous effort to protect lives in the face of danger.
