Chairman of the National Union of Roads Transport Workers (NURTW), Igwuruta branch in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Comrade Richard Larry Nyeche has commended the State Transport Ministry for its directives that all commercial cabs operating in the state be painted with the state’s approved colours of blue and white.
Comrade Richard Larry Nyeche who made the commendation in an exclusive chat with Thescale.com.ng on Wednesday in his office in Igwuruta stated that, “it is very commendable and long overdue because in other states like Lagos commercial vehicles are easily identified by the state colours.
“If the Ministry of Transportation can enforce this, It will help to curb criminal activities in Rivers State, especially the issues of one chance robberies and kidnappings which have become a menace in the state.”
He however appealed to the Ministry to tamper justice with mercy by extending the deadline to January 2027 because of the rainy season and the current economic hardships on the people.
The Igwuruta branch chairman of the union promised to sure that all his members abide by the directive of the ministry since the reason is a laudable one because, according to him, security is everyone’s business.
He went further to praise the Ministry for being proactive, pointing out that his members, when told about the directives in their branch meeting commended the government but appealed for an extension.
Recall that the State Transport Ministry had last August 13, 2026 directed all commercial transport vehicles and taxis in the state to paint their vehicles, buses and others with the approved colours of blue and white on or before end of October this year.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry gave the directives in a stakeholders meeting with all transport unions and operators at the Waterlines office in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
