2027: PDP Woos Peter Obi

Professor Jerry Gana, a founding member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed that his party has reached out and invited the former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi to come back to the party he ported from.

He made the confirmation in an interview recently with the Africa Independent Television (AIT) network programme when he spoke on Peter Obi’s political standing and the dynamics of the 2027 general election.

According to Prof. Gana, Peter Obi, a former member of the PDP, remains a credible and respected candidate in Nigerian politics and a factor in the upcoming presidential election.

He confirmed in the interview that they contacted Peter Obi in a bid to get him back to their party and also revealed ongoing discussions with several southern politicians and highlighted his role as the leader of the delegates engaged in these talks.

Reflecting on the 2023 election, Prof. Gana remarked that if he were in the position of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, he would have stepped aside to support Peter Obi. Such a move, he said, would have elevated Atiku Abubakar to the status of a true statesman.

Unconfirmed permutations have been viraled on social media that it was the FCT Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike who had been wooing and promising Peter Obi the presidential ticket of the PDP.

However, political analysts are of the opinion that while Peter Obi may take the invitation of Prof Jerry Gana serious, he would wave off that of the FCT Minister because of the loquacious nature of the minister.

The opposition PDP, had in its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja last Thursday reportedly agreed to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the south. But many still don’t see it as a credible platform because it has been engineered to be an arm of the ruling party.
