Atiku Abubakar Ditches PDP For The Third Time

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) whose flag he flew in  the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections.

This is the third time he is resigning from the party which he is a foundation member, having done so in 2007 to actualize his presidential ambition.

He came back after losing that election to late President Umaru Musa YarAdua and started scheming for the 2011 presidential election. He left again when it became obvious that there would be no flag for him in the PDP.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar contested that election under the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) which President Goodluck Jonathan won. Thereafter, he teamed up with Tinubu and Buhari to berth the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013 which brought out Buhari as President.

He was given a waiver in 2019 to come and fly the PDP flag in the 2019 presidential election which he did but lost to then incumbent President Buhari. He also flew the party’s flag in the last 2023 presidential election.

His resignation from the party comes weeks after he joined members of the Coalition group to adopt the ADC as the party to kick out the ruling APC government from Aso Rock.

In his letter of resignation, Atiku hinged his decision to resign on the current trajectory of the PDP which he believes diverges from the fundamental principles the party stood for.
