The Rivers State Police Commissioner, CP Olugbenga Adepoju has inaugurated the first batch of the 2025 Skills Acquisition training programme of the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) in the state.

The Commissioner, who inaugurated the programme today, Tuesday July 1, 2025 at the Igwuruta Police Station in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state urged participants to take the training serious so as to empower their lives to be useful to their families and society.

“It’s a good thing this morning that we’re kick-starting our acquisition programme right here in the Rivers State command. This is an initiative of our mother, the POWA National President, Dr (Mrs) Elizabeth Egbetokun, the wife of our indefatigable IGP, IG Kayode Egbetokun.

“This is to ensure that we empower our women, our mothers, who are to bring up the future leaders of tomorrow, our children. And equally help in supporting your husbands, your families in whatever way they can by also generating money from what they do. We don’t want you to sit idle and the IGP wife decided that this should be done in all the 36 states, including Abuja. And today, to the glory of God, we are here.

“About 50 trainees will embark on different kinds of trainings, skills acquisition to be able to be their own CEOs and also to create employment for our youth and other members of the society. As they’re trained, they’re going to ensure that they pass the knowledge to others. This will also create jobs for others. So, it’s a liveable programme,” he stated in his keynote address at the event.

He advised the trainees: “that they should take it very, very serious because opportunity comes but once. And take all necessary things taught you hook, line and sinker. Try to professionalise yourselves, try to improve on what you’ve been taught here, so that you’ll be able to disseminate all to others in the society . . .”

The State Public Relations Officer of POWA, Dr (Mrs) Egbo Glad Ogechi, in an exclusive chat disclosed that they intend to train and empower about 200 trainees for the year and that this first batch of 50 would be passing out in three months time.

“This is the first for this year 2025 and this training is coming in batches. This is the first batch, the batch A and in this batch A, we’ll be training 50 women in two different skills. We’ve the Fashion Design skill and the beautification skill. The trainees will be empowered at end of the training,” she told Thescale.com.ng.

Other speakers at the event extolled POWA for the initiative and advised the trainees to focus on their training so that others would benefit from them.

Dignitaries who graced the occasion included the Paramount Ruler of Igwuruta, Prof Nweke; Igwuruta Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) chairman, Chief Michael Weje; Commanders of Police Commands in the state and other DPOs in Ikwerre LGA.
