A frontline Rivers State business mongul, Chief Isaac Nwonwu has suggested proper civic orientation for all Nigerians in order to correct what he called foundational problems that have plagued the country for long.
The foundational problems, he emphasized are the level of graft, corruption, unpatriotism and lack of respect for our laws by those we see as our representatives at various level of trust, adding that you can’t take the wrong people to make laws because, Nigeria already have sufficient laws. But what is required for now by Nigerians is effective reorientation.
Chief Nwonwu, speaking to journalists parallel to a function in Port Harcourt, said, notwithstanding the foundation of the various institutions in the country, be it administrative, corporate or traditional and at the various tiers of government, there is need to re-establish a stronghold for our laws.
“We already have sufficient laws in Nigeria, but I think that what Nigeria needs for now is massive reorientation. We should reorientate ourselves by recalibrating our value system, ethical and moral conduct and our law enforcement dynamics that can be sustained”, he said.
He maintained that for the citizenry to properly conform with the system of taxation in Nigeria, appreciating the conceptual framework of the topic of the lecture “Plug and Play” will help in fast tracking proper and prudent management of tax prayers money by those responsible for the benefit of the people.
“It is also worthy of note that citizens are constitutionally bound to exercise their due civic duties, but what obtains presently in most cases is the reverse, and this inaugural lecturer seems to be economical with the truth. I’m talking about the level of corruption and how irresponsible we have been able to manage our tax revenue”, he said.
He was also added his voice to the emergency rule in Rivers State, in which he accused some Rivers people of having short memory about the happenings in the State, pointing out that those making so much noise about the system are those that have been benefiting from the crisis.
The Rivers born business mongul and politician insisted that the state of emergency, whether wrong or right, is to make necessary correction in the system, and it is necessary to applaud the president for the move, even as he called for patience among the citizenry.
