Former Super Eagles forward, Obafemi Martins has expressed confidence that Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles will clinch one of Africa’s qualification spots for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Martins, who expressed this confidence in Abuja as a guest of the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade pointed out that the team has the talent to qualify. Just as he warned that missing out of the world cup for the second consecutive time would be disastrous for both players and country.
“I am optimistic that the Super Eagles will bounce back from a poor start and secure qualification to the 2026 World Cup. The team boasts quality players who are hungry to play on the world stage. Their hunger will give them the ticket.”
So far in the world cup qualifying series, Nigeria has boxed herself into a tight corner, finishing second to the bottom. With a point ahead of Zimbabwe at the bottom, Nigeria has three points from four matches while South Africa , Rwanda and Benin Republic has seven points each in Group C.
It’s a herculean task for new Head Coach Eric Chelle, who will be in charge for Nigeria’s next two crucial qualifiers to turn things around.
The team will travel to Kigali to face Rwanda on 21 March 2025 before hosting Zimbabwe in Uyo on 25 March 2025 – two matches that could define their World Cup fate.
Our Sports Reporter learnt that the Amavubi of Rwanda will on Saturday in Kigali, the capital city test their strength against a local club side as part of their preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
He further reports that the Rwanda Football Association (FERWAFA) has announced the appointment of Algerian Adel Amrouche as new head coach of the Amavubi on Sunday. Amrouche will use the friendly to assess home-based players before unveiling his squad for the game against Super Eagles.
Rwanda will host the Super Eagles in a matchday five encounter at the Amahoro Stadium on Friday, March 21. The Amavubi will host Lesotho at the same venue three days later.
