The Rivers State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the attackers of the King of Bangha Kingdom in Khana Local Government Area of the state, His Royal Majesty (HRM) Suanu Timothy Baridam.

The monarch was reportedly shot in the leg while returning from an engagement in Okwale community in the same LGA on Sunday, January 25, 2026.

Reports say the attack occurred between Taabaa Junction and Sogho in Khana LGA when armed assailants attempted to stop his vehicle. But that the driver reportedly refused to halt, prompting the attackers to open fire, injuring both the king and his driver.

We gathered that the monarch is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Port Harcourt, the state capital and that motive for the attack remains unknown.

Chairman of Khana LGA, Mr Thomas Bariere, condemned the attack and said it was not linked to any gang-related dispute. He described the incident as an attempt to instil fear and disrupt economic activity in the area.

“Their intention is to cause intimidation and create an atmosphere that looks like there is a crisis in Khana, which could drive away businesses and investors. We have faced this before, we understand their antics, and we are on top of our game,” Bariere said, adding that the council would not tolerate attacks on residents and promised that perpetrators would be brought to justice.

Similarly, Executive Director of Youth and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC), Fyneface Dumnamene said the attack was “not only on the King’s person but also an affront to the traditional institution in Rivers State and a threat to the peace of Bangha Kingdom, Khana, Ogoni, and the Niger Delta region.

Meanwhile, Spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko has confirmed the attack. “Yes, I confirm the attack. He sustained gunshot injuries. However, he is responding to treatment, and investigation is ongoing.”
